Deus Ex: Mankind Divided is out now on PC, PS4 and Xbox One (you can read our review here to find out what we think of it), and to mark the occasion of Adam Jensen's return we've collected together a selection of hints and tips that should help you quickly and easily get to grips with the array of options available to you in this choice-filled science fiction adventure.

Maintain a backup save file

While this stands as good practice for pretty much any game, it's especially crucial in Mankind Divided as many of your actions are fixed and irreversible.

What the game fails to mention is that side missions cannot be revisited and remain permanently failed if you don't prevail on your first attempt. Keeping a backup handy will prevent you from this potential heartache and allow you to soar towards that golden 100% completion rating.

This is an ad:

Also, as the story is so dependant on choice, its useful to store an additional file incase you're struck with instant regret following a pivotal decision, or are perhaps curious to see how the other options pan out. Worst case scenario, your save file corrupts and you have to track back and play the same section of game (as happened to us). Do yourself a favour, save often.

Hack everything

Tedious we know, but manipulating security panels on doors and laptops will often grant you access to secluded pathways and telling snippets of information.

This is an ad:

Snooping through an unsuspecting victim's email will usually reveal security codes and locations to key items that would have otherwise been missed. Similarly, gaining access to restricted areas helps to aid a more stealthy approach and heightens the chance that you'll stumble upon some exclusive goodies.

You'll also occasionally come across security panels that can be breached to disarm laser traps and alarm systems. As you'd expect this significantly decreases your chances of being apprehended and helps to lull your foes into a false sense of security.

Search for alternative routes

Operating as a lone wolf you'll frequently find yourself caught in a building swarming with guards with no clear path for your escape. Instead of trudging through the inevitable bullet hell that awaits you, there's often alternative option that allows you to slip by undetected.

Whilst scanning your surroundings you'll likely catch sight of air vents, elevated platforms and hackable doors, which can all be accessed to bypass the patrolling threat. When venturing off the beaten path you'll often be rewarded with a handsome exploratory XP bonus and it remains a crucial step for those tirelessly seeking the pacifist trophy.

Master the revised controls

No tutorial segments are particularly fun, but Mankind Divided's can be breezed through in a matter of minutes allowing you to easily get to grips with the controls in a zero pressure environment.

The cover system may seem daunting at first but it's important that you master it, as using it to snap behind subsequent secluded areas works to be a much smoother process than freely manoeuvring around the environment. It also makes combat much easier as you can duck out of harms way after peering out and unleashing your attack.

As mentioned in our review, some of the button choices are a little questionable and can take some getting used to, so its recommended that you have some practice. We were often caught out during combat as we frequently forgot that the triangle button was assigned to the dash.

Purchase only the essentials

Not only are the majority of merchants in Mankind Divided condescending bullies, but they also have the audacity to drive some highly extortionate prices for their smuggled goods.

We strongly recommend that you steer clear of purchasing ammunition and consumables as they can be easily found when pickpocketing fallen enemies and rummaging through newly discovered areas. Attachments and uncommon weapons still remain as valid options, as you're less likely to encounter them when cleaning up after combat. With prices standing so steep we urge you to splash your well-earned credits on something a little more meaningful.

If you're extra feeling daring, there's the option to wipe out the merchant and his band of hired goons to gain access to their hidden stash of credits and artillery.

Be wary of your augmentations

Experimental augmentations may give you the illusion of being a super powered badass but there means come a price.

To prevent your system from hurtling into overdrive you must select one of the other stream of augmentations to be permanently deactivated. This requires careful consideration as shutting down a much needed skill can, later on, have devastating consequences. Be sure to read through the detailed log of augmentations beforehand to make an informative choice based on what you're less likely to need.

There's the potential to reset all of your deactivated abilities by completing a particular side objective, but this occurs quite late on in the game.

Smart Vision and Hacking Stealth are essential early purchases

Granted, this is completely subjective, but we found these augmentations to be essential during the earlier stages of the game.

Smart Vision is a handy tool to have at your disposal as it provides you with a thermal scan of your surroundings, highlighting the locations of your unsuspecting enemies.  As well as ensuring that you don't open fire on innocent bystanders, the augmentation can be use to formulate a more efficient plan of attack and prevents you from having to peek out of cover to find your foes' whereabouts.

As expressed earlier, hacking is a massive part of the experience so having a skill to make it significantly easier is a must.  While it does start off being awfully simplistic, hacking is soon to ramp in difficulty adding more complex puzzles and secure datastores. Hacking Stealth helps to smooth the overall difficulty curve by significantly decreasing your chances of being detected.

Social Enhancer and the Klipslinger Jump Mod are also recommended

We may have already labelled the big players, but it doesn't hurt to have these abilities tucked up your sleeve.

Transforming you into a master of conversation, the Social Enhancer augmentation allows you to better read NPCs during conversation and helps to lead you towards the most suitable choices available. This allows you to stay on the good side of NPCs during pivotal moments of the story, enabling things to pan out more in your favour and preventing you from landing in potential pitfalls.

As you'd expect, the Klipslinger Jump Mod enables you to thrust yourself to higher heights, allowing you to reach platforms and ventilation shafts you wouldn't otherwise be able to reach. Not only does it serve as a handy escape tool during hostile situations, but also increases your chances of striking lucky as many of the game's most valuable items are found in hard to reach areas.
