Daybreak Games has released its largest update for H1Z1: Just Survive to date, which brings not only new content but also a new narrative, distancing itself from the normal H1Z1 universe as part of a rebrand. This is all part of what the press release refers to as "the development team's evolved vision for the game [which] lays the foundation for future updates in the months to come."
"Our new logo and key art highlight all the aspects of the game that players know and love—from base building and defending, to looting and exploring, and also reflects how Just Survive is developing into a more mature and polished game," said Ben Jones, Just Survive's Creative Director. "Just Survive is about more than just killing zombies, it's about the player's survival journey. Re-establishing society isn't an easy task, and this update introduces a variety of features, like Strongholds, that encourage players to band together through the dangers and tension of post-apocalyptic life while striving to reclaim their world from the zombie hordes."
There are four key areas to focus on in this update, the first of which is Badwater Canyon, a whole new world map with new styles of gameplay in mind and lots of options for Stronghold construction. This will be gradually rolled out over time, region by region, and will replace the game's original map.
There's also a new Stronghold system in which players can build structures and then fortify them with traps and defences, encouraging problem solving. Customisation options are available too, so each Stronghold can be unique. Weapons have been revamped on top of that as well, with all of them being rebuilt from scratch, and tiers being introduced. Melee combat has also been improved with a new hit registration and attack animation overhaul.
Lastly, Golden Eagle Coins have also been introduced, as items in the world can be exchanged for this new currency, tied to individual characters, with the aim being to "create true value for each item in the world, tackling the problem of item hoarding." This currency is needed to purchase new Stronghold locations, and its usage will be expanded in the future.
