Creative Assembly has announced some free DLC for owners of both Total War: Warhammer 1 and 2, called Mortal Empires, which will offer an "epic fantasy strategy experience, a playable campaign in its own right, accessed through the Warhammer II menu."

In this DLC Creative Assembly will "be taking the iconic territory of the Old World you know from the first game and expanding outwards to the West, taking in key territories from Lustria, the Southlands, Naggaroth, and Ulthuan to massively expand the playable area. It's not a straight stitch-'n'-fit job, and it can't be - the Old World and Eye of The Vortex campaign maps are designed to be standalone; they're different shapes and don't 'fit together'. Also, no Vortex story mechanics here: this is pure conquest, with all the playable races and factions we've released so far (plus a ton of AI controlled ones) vying for dominance across the continents."

This is part of a wider strategy where the devs intend there to be five big campaigns for fans of the trilogy, these being the base campaigns for all three games, plus two free DLCs, of which Mortal Empires is the first.

Mortal Empires is a production of the New Content team, headed by Rich Aldridge, and offers more playable factions, three new races, sub-factions, and more, not to mention 35 Legendary Lords across 25 starting positions. Features in Warhammer II's campaign will also carry over as well, such as UI refinements.

In terms of settlements, Mortal Empires is over twice as big as the Old World, and is "effectively a new map in its own right." End turn times will also increase due to the number of factions, and CA also emphasises that they are looking for feedback to tweak and update it over time.

Mortal Empires will drop shortly after launch. Is this looking promising to you?
