Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle has been a great success for both Ubisoft and Nintendo, effectively filling out the gap until Super Mario Odyssey can take over on the Switch, and earning tons of positive reviews and great sales numbers in the process.

The game is undoubtedly an unusual mix, bringing Xcom-inspired turn-based strategy into the Mario universe. As an example of just how much inspiration they drew from the turn-based alien shooter, the creator of the series was actually asked to come and work on the Mario + Rabbids title.

Julian Gollop, original Xcom creator, told this to PCGamesN, and he even stated that he might have said yes. He was called three years back by director Davide Soliani, but he couldn't tell Gollop exactly what it ended up being. Shortly after the call, Gollop left Ubisoft.

"I didn't know at the time that the project he was talking about was Mario + Rabbids, he couldn't say what it was. Had I been at Ubisoft I may have worked on it."
