Super Mario Odyssey is showing great muscle in the market, as the first official sales shared by Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima a couple of days ago showed that two million units were sold in the first three days. The game is clearly resonating in lots of different territories, further proving the achievement of this new entry, more so when we're talking about a more open world formula on a system that's not even a year old.

It turns out that the game also just broke a new record in Europe, as Nintendo has said that Odyssey has become the "fastest-selling Super Mario game ever in Europe, surpassing launch weekend sales for Super Mario Galaxy 2". The aforementioned two million copies also make it the best release sales-wise for a Switch game (overtaking Mario Kart 8 Deluxe), so it's not a bad result for the mascot.

In Japan the success has been similar, as between 460,000 and 500,000 units were sold during October's last weekend, according to Media-Create and Famitsu respectively. The difference? The former is only accounting for physical sales at retail, whereas the latter includes downloadable code cards, which are also sold at retail (and none consider direct eShop purchases, it seems). With that, it easily beats previous Super Mario games, whether home console or handheld, as Galaxy 2 launched at 339,901 and Super Mario 3D Land did 343,492.

The additional Switch stock prepared for such a big launch has been key as well. More than 126,000 systems were sold during the week, enough to break the two million hardware units barrier in Japan, but even bigger was the shipment in America, as according to Nintendo of America's PR, October closed with more than 2.6 million consoles in the US. That means around 600,000 Switches were sold in October alone, as it was at the end of September when the system surpassed the two million mark.

This isn't even into the Christmas campaign yet either, which will be tight and exciting with a dominating PS4, a Switch on a streak, and a brand new Xbox One X.
